A reminder that this is the outside of the Mercy Ministry
Home, which is a private residence that is used as a school. It’s 3 stories
tall and surrounded by a high, concrete block fence. The steel gates are locked
all day; the kids knock to come in. If Robin and I leave to go to the feeding
center or for the weekend, we have to ring the buzzer to get back in.
After teaching
each day, the kids leave, the teacher leaves, and eventually the cook leaves.
Robin and I are locked in for the night.
This is Milako, the security guard (I asked him to smile for his picture). He arrives around 6:30 p.m. (that’s 12:30 Ethiopian time) and stays until 6:30 a.m. (again, 12:30 Ethiopian time; come to think of it, I don’t know how they distinguish morning and evening). See those bars over his right shoulder? That’s where he sleeps at night.
Security quarters.
